What does an Oxford summer school really cost?
A useful comparison includes the whole journey: academic teaching, accommodation, meals, travel, activities, feedback and the expenses outside the fee.
The answer in brief
Compare the total trip, not the headline fee.
An Oxford summer school price is meaningful only when you know what it includes. Put tuition, accommodation, meals, transfers, activities and required extras into one total. The Oxford Summer Academy 2027 Full Programme is £6,395 including VAT; its published inclusions and exclusions are set out below so families can compare like with like.
A lower advertised fee can become a higher total if accommodation, weekday lunches, airport transfers, excursions or academic materials are separate. A higher fee is not automatically better either. Value depends on the teaching ratio, the work a student produces, the quality of feedback, residential support and whether the promised experience is actually evidenced.
Use the same worksheet for every provider. If a cost is unclear, mark it as unknown rather than assuming it is included.
The 2027 Academy fee
| Option | Published fee | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| Full Programme | £6,395 including VAT | The complete two-week residential programme. |
| Scholars Tier | £6,995 including VAT | The Full Programme plus premium accommodation and pre-programme academic calibration. |
| Deposit | £1,299 | Part of the total fee, not an additional charge. The balance is due within 30 days. |
What the published price covers
Both tiers include major and minor tutorials, the Future Labs, an extended research paper with feedback, the Oxford Global Forum, the London excursion, organised activities, college accommodation, programme meals, specified Heathrow transfers and residential welfare provision.
Flights, personal spending, travel to airports other than Heathrow, travel outside the specified transfer windows and unrelated expenses are not included. Families should read the current terms before paying because payment and cancellation conditions matter as much as the number on the page.
A fair comparison worksheet
| Cost line | Questions to ask | Why it changes the total |
|---|---|---|
| Academic tuition | How many hours? What group size? Is preparation and feedback included? | A lecture seat and a one-to-one tutorial are not equivalent units of teaching. |
| Accommodation | How many nights, what room basis and which dates? | Extra hotel nights can materially change an international family's budget. |
| Meals | Which meals and days are covered? | An apparently residential fee may include breakfast only or exclude weekend meals. |
| Transfers | Which airport, dates and time windows? | Private transfers outside a programme window can be expensive. |
| Activities | Are admissions, excursions and local transport included? | Compulsory trips should not appear later as surprises. |
| Outputs | Is written feedback, assessment or a report included? | A certificate records attendance; feedback and completed work carry the educational value. |
| Travel documents | Visa or ETA, insurance and consent-document costs? | These sit outside most programme fees and vary by student. |
What value should look like
Price the educational substance
The most useful cost-per-day calculation is still incomplete. Two programmes of the same length can offer very different levels of academic attention. Ask what the student must prepare, how often they speak and defend ideas, what they write, and what feedback exists after the final day.
At the Oxford Summer Academy, tutorials are normally one-to-one or two-to-one and may occasionally be three-to-one. Each student studies a major and minor, completes an extended research paper and receives a Delta Academic Profile. Those are the elements against which the price should be judged—not Oxford imagery alone.
Attention per student
Check the normal ratio and what happens between taught sessions.
Something produced
Look for research, writing, projects or argument—not attendance alone.
Evidence for next steps
Ask what is returned to the student and how specific it will be.
Questions families ask
Are Oxford summer schools free?
Independent residential programmes normally charge fees. Some providers may offer scholarships or financial support under their own criteria. At OGE, scholarship requests are considered during the application process and remain subject to assessment and available funding.
Is the cheapest programme the best value?
Not necessarily. Compare the complete trip cost and the actual academic model. Equally, a high price is not proof of strong teaching.
What should be confirmed before payment?
The operator, dates, venue arrangements, teaching format, inclusions, exclusions, payment schedule, cancellation terms and what happens if a material element changes.
Is Oxford Global Education part of the University of Oxford?
No. Oxford Global Education is an independent education provider and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge.
