How to choose A levels for university
The right combination starts with course requirements, then balances genuine academic interest, likely attainment and workload. There is no single set of A levels that is best for every selective university.
The decision in one page
List the degree areas you might realistically consider, including two or three adjacent alternatives.
Check required and recommended subjects on several current university course pages, not only one institution.
Protect any essential subject before optimising the rest of the combination.
Choose subjects you can study deeply for two years and in which the evidence suggests you can earn strong grades.
Test the combination for workload, assessment clashes and prerequisite gaps.
Recheck requirements before enrolment and again before applying because course rules can change.
Required, recommended and useful are different

UCAS says entry requirements vary by course and provider and may include particular qualifications, subjects and grades. Oxford likewise advises students to check course-specific subject requirements, while generally choosing subjects they enjoy and are likely to do well in. The Oxford admissions requirements table explicitly distinguishes required, recommended and helpful subjects.
Examples that show why checking matters
These are illustrations, not a substitute for the current course page. Requirements change by university, by course and sometimes by college or pathway.
Biochemistry
Oxford's current summary requires Chemistry and another science or Mathematics, with A*AA including the A* in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Biology. Mathematics is recommended.
Biology
Oxford's current summary requires Biology and either Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, with A*AA and the A* in a science or Mathematics.
Mathematical routes
Cambridge says Further Mathematics is required for Mathematics and Computer Science, and required or strongly recommended for several other quantitative courses. Availability at the applicant's school matters to the advice.
The wider lesson is more important than the examples: a popular-sounding combination can still close a specific route if one prerequisite is missing. Conversely, many degrees have no universal essential subject. Do not force every student into the same template.
If you know what you want to study
- Build a small comparison sheet with at least five plausible courses. Record required subjects, grades, tests, written work and any combination exclusions.
- Use the university's own course page as the controlling source; UCAS is a useful cross-check and discovery tool.
- Look beyond the course title. Two degrees with the same name can have different content, mathematics level and prerequisites.
- If Further Mathematics is relevant but your school does not offer it, read the university's contextual guidance and ask your school about supported alternatives early.
- Do not assume that taking the school version of a degree subject is always necessary. Law, for example, commonly has no A-level Law requirement; exact policies still need checking.

Keep real options open, not imaginary ones
Use the Russell Group-backed Informed Choices tool to test combinations against broad degree areas, then verify the results on individual university pages. Its own guidance says it is only a guide.
Avoid the old myth that one universal list of "facilitating subjects" is mandatory for all Russell Group degrees. Informed Choices explains that this was never the case and has replaced the old list with personalised subject-combination guidance.
Choose one or two plausible degree families and identify the subjects that recur as essential across them.
Use remaining choices to balance breadth with subjects you genuinely enjoy and can perform strongly in.
Prefer combinations that preserve adjacent routes you would actually consider, rather than the maximum theoretical number of degrees.
Review the decision with a teacher or adviser who knows both the requirements and your work.
How many A levels should you take?
Three strong A levels are the normal basis of UK university offers. Cambridge states that its offers are usually based on three A levels taken together in Year 13. Ofqual's 2026 data shows that 63.9% of A-level students took three subjects, compared with 4.9% taking four.
A fourth subject can make sense where Further Mathematics is part of a quantitative pathway, where a student is still narrowing choices, or where the school timetable supports it without weakening the core three. It should be an intentional academic choice, not a generic badge of ambition.
A combination stress test
- Eligibility: does it satisfy every required subject for your realistic course shortlist?
- Attainment: what evidence from current work suggests you can reach the likely grades?
- Interest: would you still want to read and practise these subjects when novelty fades?
- Assessment: are you comfortable with the balance of exams, essays, practical work, speaking, coursework and problem solving?
- Workload: do deadlines, performances, practical records or coursework cluster across the combination?
- Support: does your school have the teaching, timetable and extension support the combination needs?
- Resilience: if one degree idea changes, which credible alternatives remain?
Frequently asked questions
Which A levels do Oxford and Cambridge prefer?
There is no single combination for every course. Both universities publish subject-specific requirements and guidance. Start with the exact degree course, then distinguish required, recommended and helpful subjects.
Do I need four A levels for Oxbridge?
No general rule says you do. Cambridge says offers are usually based on three A levels. Further Mathematics and particular quantitative routes can affect the best combination, so check the course guidance.
Are facilitating subjects still a rule?
No. The Russell Group's Informed Choices FAQ says the old list was never a rule that students had to take only those subjects, and the personalised tool has replaced it.
Should I take an A level because it looks impressive?
Choose it when it is required, genuinely useful or a strong academic fit. A subject that damages attainment without opening a relevant route is not automatically strategic.
What if I choose the wrong subjects?
Check requirements as early as possible. Some universities or courses may offer alternatives or foundation years, but these vary. Speak to your school and the relevant university admissions team before assuming a route is closed.
