UK visas and ETA for summer school students
Most international students need either a visa, an Electronic Travel Authorisation or an existing UK immigration status before travelling. The correct permission depends on nationality, purpose, course and personal circumstances.
Use this decision sequence
Use the official GOV.UK checker for the individual traveller. An ETA is permission to travel, not a visa and not a guarantee of entry. Each traveller needs their own permission, including a child where the ETA rules apply.

Visa ETA or existing permission
Standard Visitor visa
Some nationalities must obtain a Standard Visitor visa before travelling. GOV.UK states that visitors can undertake certain study for up to six months when the relevant requirements are met. The provider and course must fit the rules that apply to the proposed study.

Electronic Travel Authorisation
An ETA is generally required for eligible visitors who do not need a visa for a short visit and do not already hold another qualifying UK status. Each family member needs their own ETA, including babies and children. Eligibility and exemptions depend on the passport and circumstances.

Existing UK permission or exemption
A traveller may not need an ETA if they already have a UK visa, permission to live, work or study in the UK, or another listed exemption. British and Irish citizens do not use an ETA. Check the complete current exemption list rather than inferring from residence alone.

An ETA does not replace visitor eligibility
An ETA authorises travel to the UK. It does not guarantee entry and does not expand the activities permitted to a visitor. A traveller may still be asked about the purpose of the visit, funding, return journey, accommodation and other eligibility matters.
Use the official checker and visitor guidance for the individual case. Do not rely on another student's permission, a nationality summary copied from a third-party website, or an old application.
Students under 18
GOV.UK states that an under-18 Standard Visitor needs suitable arrangements for travel and the stay. A student travelling alone needs written consent from a parent or guardian and full contact details. Evidence of suitable accommodation and the person responsible for the young person may also be required.

Travel evidence
Prepare consent for the journey, the responsible adults' details, the itinerary and any airline documents. Requirements may also arise in the country of departure or return.
Stay and care evidence
Prepare the programme acceptance information, residential address when confirmed, contact details and a clear account of who is responsible for the student during the stay.
Documents families may need
The exact evidence depends on the application and traveller. GOV.UK provides the authoritative requirements. A practical preparation file may include:
- The passport that will be used for the application and travel.
- The visa, ETA or evidence of existing UK immigration permission.
- Programme acceptance and evidence explaining the course and dates.
- Accommodation and responsible-adult details for a traveller under 18.
- Written parental or guardian consent where required.
- Evidence of funds, payment, return or onward travel where relevant.
- Certified translations when an official process requires them.
- Copies of submitted evidence and the decision or confirmation.
